Dear Diary, (December 2002)

Wow. Wonder of wonders, miracle of miracles. Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus! For years I've been lamenting the month of December and wishing we could just cancel it. Birthdays and holidays, enforced merriment and obligated gift-giving... I sounded much like my father's cynical annual Christmas letters. I thought we were in store for yet another nice-on-the-outside, flat-on-the-inside holiday season. Boy, was I wrong!! Thank you Nicole and Westi... sometimes it's wonderful to be wrong. Westi asked to have Christmas at home (ours, that is). To exchange stocking gifts and to spend the day making a gingerbread house. A return to old, beloved traditions, the best of our life together as a family. (Although we still started Christmas day with our tradition of recent years... packing Meals on Wheels alongside Michael's family.) And Nicole, well, she gave us the best present possible. Herself. We've seen Noli more in the last month than in the past two years. She gave me a birthday present and helped us move a shed; made chowder, baked bread and birthday cake with her dad for their birthday, helped decorate our house for Christmas (even brought a tree!) and shared Christmas with us. I'll say it again. Wow. last • next
